Updated 9.2.2014 Gravity - the movie about space debris colliding with space stations and their astronauts (check the trailer) - gives us an excellent understanding of the dangers up there. Even if it isn't quite that bad, yet.  But it could be one day, judging from the accumulation of debris in Earth's atmospheric layers. Since the start of the space age in 1957, there have been some 5000 launches that almost all leave something behind in the space, as do all the collisions between satellites and meteoroids - or between two satellites! In 2009 the much feared first accidental collision between two large spacecraft took place as the satellite Iridium 33 collided with an old, non-operational Russian satellite at 789 km above Siberia. There are currently some 20 000 pieces of space debris larger than 5 centimeters traversing around the planet.

So the space in the low Earth orbit region is becoming more and more crowded (the white area closest to Earth in the picture above). NASA scientist Donald J. Kessler proposed already in 1978 in his Kessler Effect a scenario in which the density of objects in low Earth orbit is high enough that collisions between objects could cause a cascade - each collision generating space debris which increases the likelihood of further collisions. That likelihood is increasingly alarming. Satellite communication that we so rely on in our daily lives will in fact be in real jeopardy as time goes by, and the same goes for the lives of all those brave men and women up in the space. We can only hope that future technologies are able to solve this growing problem. Meanwhile it doesn't do any harm keeping our fingers crossed.

United Nation's Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) deals with issues of the international legal regime of space and the guidelines and protocols. The issue is not forgotten, it is very much on the front burner. The director of the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs Mazlan Othman was asked among other things in this excellent interview what UN has to say about space debris - read her answer to the question under "Given the problem of space debris, is it a positive development that more countries can send satellites into orbit?"

Updated 31.12.2013 One of the claims that the sceptics make as to why UFOs don't really exist is the fact that there are hardly any clear pictures of them. And why is that? During the Belgian UFO Wave 1989-1990, hundreds of pictures were taken, but not one was sharp and clear. Many observers had their cameras ready, and took what they thought would be clear images, but when the film was developed, the image was blurred. 

Physics professor Auguste Meessen investigated the problem and deduced that infrared light was the culprit. To put his theory to test, he exposed film to infrared, then photographed objects in regular light. The results were the same as the photographs of the triangle-shaped UFO.  One good image was finally captured though - on video tape.

So could it be that the extraterrestrial crafts have some sort of blurring devices which make it simply impossible to get a sharp picture of them - unless they have a 'deal' with someone like Billy Meier? And the same goes for videos of course. So perhaps we shouldn't even bother to try to snap photos at all, but instead just look at them, the crafts,  amazed, and never mind the evidence or memento - the truth will out eventually no matter what.

And if many of the UFOs we see are in a multidimensional state when we see them flying up there - where they are able to partly/totally be seen, or not at all, depending on where they are in that state - it is no wonder that photographing them can be a real challenge. It could be a matter of fractions of seconds to get that perfect picture!

But just like car engines and electrical devices are often shut off near UFOs, so are cameras! That is what happened to the Australian UFO hunter Lazslo Novak as his camcorder stopped working - yet another obstacle to overcome in getting a picture of a UFO!

And should you try to get pictures using an infrared camera, you might be in for a few surprises... Not all is what it seems though - UFOs end up being something natural or man-made, and vice versa.

USO Sightings

Updated 26.1.2014 Water covers a vast majority of our planet. About 70 percent is covered in ocean, and the average depth is several thousand feet (about 1,000 meters).  So is it really any wonder that many of the UFOs we see also  submerge in water - becoming unidentified submarine/submerged objects - and use water as a base or place to visit/hide? The perfect place. Here are some of those sightings associated with such crafts. These are also included in the general listings.

1945 M/S Franklin D Roosevelt - UFO Files:Deep Sea UFOs(at13m30s) -

1967-0630-1815 Captain Ardanza and crew onboard the Argentinian ship "Naviero" recognized a cylindrical-shaped object in the sea about 120 miles off coast of southern Brazil. The object emited a blue-white light - the intensity of it was the same everywhere. It was approximately 33 metres long. There came no noise and there were no waves! While the crew was watching the strange submarine it changed its course in direction of the "Naviero", accelerated and dived under the ship, and disappeared in the deeper sea. - UFO EVIDENCE - Water UFO -

1967-1004-2320 Shag Harbour incident - the impact of an unknown large object into waters near a small fishing village Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada. 1976-0430-1715-> A USO breaks with great power through the ice of Lake Siljan in Dalarna, Sweden. The ice was still over 20 cm thick, but three witnesses report about a grey object about 10 meters long tearing a channel through the ice -it caused an over 800 metres long and 4 metres wide "channel" in the ice while it was moving and cracking with a speed of nearly 100 km/h before it was flying up to the sky without any damage! - UFO EVIDENCE - Water UFO -
1978-1021-1912 The Valentich Disappearance. 20-year-old Frederick Valentich is flying his Cessna 182 over Bass Strait in Australia when he observes an unknown craft accompanying him. He informs the air traffic control, and then the radio dies. No trace of a possible crash is found. 1980-0726-1930 The engines of the Brazilian ship "Caioba-Seahorse" suddenly stop off the coast of Brazil. The sailors see a grey round object drifting in the water. At the same time a bright light appears on the horizon, comes closer to the ship, and approaches the USO. The above light - now seen as a bright disc shaped object - sinks down to the USO and connects with it. Both objects then rise from the water, hover for a few minutes over the sea and then accelerate with very high speed up to the sky and disappear. - UFO EVIDENCE - Water UFO -

1992-1220 Near Langeness. Iceland's Navy tracks three large UFOs as they are coming down and entering the sea off the east coast of Iceland. Other witnesses confirm seeing these UFOs, and they were also tracked on radar. - National UFO Center -

1992-1221 Iceland. Some Icelandic fishermen report seeing large underwater craft, with flashing colored lights. They appeared to be tracked by (or be tracking) a glowing object in the sky traveling southward in the direction of Scotland. The underwater craft caused a lot of damage to the fishermen's trawler nets. The fishermen were used to submarine activity in the area, but said these particular craft were definitely not normal submarines - they moved too fast through the water, had flashing lights, and were far larger than anything they had seen before. Two days later Icelandic Navy and coastguard joined by NATO ships start investigating the area. - according to newspapers 'tracking large underwater craft, thought to be a new breed of Russian super submarine'. 2005-1008-0705 52-year old Catholic lay minister George Gregory Matanjun and his wife witness a UFO emerging from the sea in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia, and then fly towards the local airport. The UFO had a curved top and a round large ball-like bottom. - UFO Evidence -
2013-1008 USO sighting. Filmed during a boat trip from the Island of Pag to the main land in Croatia. Like so often is the case, there are no splashes at the dive, and some kind of blue light is seen just before the dive which could have something to do with the of absence of splashes. - UFOFilesTV(2m02s) -

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

Updated 15.1.2014 Besides being a title for a Steven Spielberg movie, close encounters of the third kind are the real-life encounters where witnesses observe an alien being, either inside or outside the craft. The term in ufology is CE3. Here are some of the most famous and most researched accounts, in chronological order. Links to various sites and videos - some of the latter may be foreign speaking, but included for an overall view. Abductions not included, but treated separately here.

1950-0424 Italy As 42-year-old worker Bruno Facchini goes to investigate the flashing outside his house in Abbiate Guazzone in Varese, he realizes that what he first thought was a military plane in trouble is in fact an alien craft! Seized with panic, he starts running, but turning back, he sees one of the crew point at him a sort of "photographic apparatus" that he was wearing round his neck, and  he is shot with a beam of light. Hurt but perfectly conscious, Facchini can hear the hum that he had heard right at the start became louder and a moment later the craft rises and vanishes at a fantastic speed into the darkness of the night. - UFO Casebook - UFO EVIDENCE -
1954-1101-0630 Italy  40-year old Rosa Lotti witnesses a landed UFO with two 3-feet tall, and friendly, occupants outside the craft in Cennina. They did snatch some flowers and a stocking from her hands though. Her encounter with the aliens were corroborated by two witnesses - UFO Evidence -

1970-0107-1645 Finland Two skiers see a longish object in the sky at Imjärvi in Heinola, southeast Finland - seen by two other witnesses from two different locations. A bit later the men saw a smaller object -  a round disc - and then a small creature in a lightgreen uniform beside the disc. The humanoid had a black box which radiated light, regularly changing in intensity. 1976-1112-0145 Spain Talavera Air Force Base, Badajoz County. Three Spanish soldiers claim to have met a three meter tall being with phosphor clothes. José Trejo, one of the soldiers, was paralyzed temporarily and fell down. The other soldiers came and shot towards the being with their machine guns. They saw a bright flash, and the being disappeared. Afterwards José Trejo experienced some loss of sight and memory; later he had parapsychological experiences. - FUFORA - Project Paranormal - Wiki -
1977-092x-2300 United Kingdom 62-year old housewife Ethel May Field witnesses a dome-shaped UFO in Parkstone, Dorset, and observes also two humanoids inside it. She protects her eyes from the bright light, and has (therefore?) later trouble with the skin on her palms. - UFO Evidence -
1996-0120 Brazil The Varginha UFO/EBE incident. A series of events involving the alleged sighting and capture by the military of extraterrestrial beings in Varginha, Brazil, preceded by a UFO sighting. One of the EBEs was poorly and easily captured by the search party. Three protrusions atop of it's head, glowing red eyes, long arms, short legs, big feet, and it smelled like ammoniac. There were reports of as many as seven being captured that day. A few weeks after the events Marco Eli Cherese, a 23 year old military policeman involved in the investigation, died. 2003-0811-0435 Poland Lech Chacinski was driving down the road near Szczecinek when he saw three figures in uniforms similar to that of an astronaut. But they were no astronauts. Chacinski stopped the car, and had the weirdest telepathic communication with the beings who said they were from the "Eight Galaxy." They had come to deliver a message to the inhabitants of Earth: 'we should care about our planet; our water and air. If we neglect our environment, they will cause our destruction'. I know what I saw!

Updated 4.2.2014 Tens of thousands of people all around the world have witnessed a UFO! Sightings vary of course as may accounts  of the UFOs seen by multiple witnesses - for each of us is unique. Nevertheless, with increasing openness, more and more people are coming forward to tell about their experiences, and give their weight on the matter.  To give you just an inkling of the magnitude of people who have seen something - crafts, lights, crew, artifacts, photographic evidence, etc - here follows a simple but increasingly long list of witnesses in alphabetical order, and with a link if there is a statement found somewhere.
