Updated 7.3.2014 This article deals with the planet Mars both from the scientific and esoteric point of view. As we look at Mars in the night sky, it's quite fascinating to think that there is something man-made on the surface of that reddish planet. And that one day humans will set their foot there as well. But will they be the first terrestrial beings there, and who else have inhabited Mars before us? Time will tell.
MARS DATA
Circumference (equatorial): 21344km (13263 miles) - 53% of Earth's
Radius: 3396km (equator), 3376km at the radius - about half of Earth's
Diameter: 6792km
Radius: 3396km (equator), 3376km at the radius - about half of Earth's
Diameter: 6792km
Mean distance from Sun: ca 230 million km (1.5 AU)
Distance from Earth: Both Earth and Mars are following elliptical orbits around the Sun.
Sometimes the planets are close together, and other times they’re on
opposite sides of the Sun. And although they get close and far apart,
those points depend on where the planets are on their particular orbits.
So, the Earth Mars distance is changing from minute to minute. 2018 should be a very good year, with a Mars looking particularly bright and red in the sky. Last closest distance from Earth was in year 2003: some 55 million kilometers (0.372719 AU). Before that it occured 57617 BC, and the next time it will be that close will be in 2287.
Temperature: on average about -80 degrees F (-60 degrees C). In winter, near the poles temperatures can get down to -195 degrees F (-125 degrees C). A summer day on Mars may get up to 70 degrees F (20 degrees C) near the equator, but at night the temperature can plummet to about -100 degrees F (-73 C).

THE TWO MOONS OF MARS
Phobos - radius 11.1km (6.9 mi). Discovered 1877. The US astronaut Buzz Aldrin, second man on the Moon, referred to a "Phobos monolith" in a July 22, 2009, interview with C-SPAN: "We should go boldly where man has not gone before. Fly by the comets, visit asteroids, visit the moon of Mars. There's a monolith there. A very unusual structure on this potato shaped object that goes around Mars once in seven hours. When people find out about that they're going to say 'Who put that there? Who put that there?' The universe put it there. If you choose, God put it there."
There is new evidence of the monolith, as explained by Richard Hoagland on CoastToCoastAM(5m12s) - pictures taken by Mars Express (sent to Mars by the European Space Agency in 2003).
There are even claims that Phobos might not be natural but an artificial moon, some sort of space station - put forward in 1966 by two major astronomers Iosif Shklovsky and Carl Sagan. Richard Hoagland is convinced the moon is hollow and artificial which means there could be extraterrestrial life there. Since it wasn't detected earlier, it could be speculated (Hoagland) that it was placed there at some point between 1875 and 1877 during Mars opposition - awaiting for the discovery by A. Hall in 1877.
Investigating Phobos has not been easy. Although Mariner 9 in 1971, Viking 1 in 1977, and Phobos 1988 managed to obtain some valuable information, there has been all sorts of mishaps and many space probes have been lost. In 1988 Russian Phobos-1 passed by the target while Phobos-2 disappeared at 50 m from the moon's surface. In 1999 Mars Climate Orbiter was lost near Phobos' orbit, and Mars Polar Lander vanished hardly touching the Martian atmosphere. In 2003 Beagle-2 (UK) shared the destiny without any firm conclusion of the loss. In 2012 Russian probe Phobos-Grunt crashed on Earth and all hope of investigating the little Martian moon vanished in the blink of an eye. The question remains: who put the monolith on Phobos? And is it rectangular at all, but instead a pyramide like Chris Joseph suggests.

COLONIZATION OF MARS
Is it possible for us humans to live on Mars? This high quality video UFO-TV: Life Quest Mars (52m25s)
attemps to answer that. There is at least no shortage of people willing to take that journey - even if they initially could never come back! Mars is a much friendlier place than the Moon, and there would definitely be resources to use for a self-sufficient life over there. But would that new frontier be welcoming us?
There is an excellent survival thriller with the title The Martian by Andy Weir - gives you a good idea what it could be like to be on the Martian soil.

Face on Mars
The picture of the Face on Mars in the Cydonia region was first taken by NASA's Viking 1 on July 25th, 1976. The American author and ufologist Richard Hoagland has widely suggested that there has been intelligent life on Mars, and that the Face on Mars (as well as a few other things there) is proof of that - but that NASA and the US goverment have conspired to keep these facts secret. Perhaps we finally get to the truth about Mars when the first humans land on Mars in a decade or so. Or perhaps the truth will be, once again, withheld from us as the astronauts come face to face with the real Martians, or remnants of them. Time will tell.
